So what do you do when you’re about to tackle a major journey or you’ve done our FTO program and you’re looking for the next challenge? Participate in the Weekend Walkabout (WW)! This course conducted on selected weekends offers a real chance to push your understanding and skills to a whole new level.
With an early Saturday start at Gepps Cross we’ll head in convoy up through the Clare Valley, past Jamestown and on up to Orroroo, where just up the road lie the Bendleby Ranges, part of the middle chain of the Flinders Ranges. You’ll have the luxury of your own room in the shearers quarters and once we’ve got you unpacked, after lunch we head for the hills. En-route a quick session on a test track adjacent to the homestead refreshes our understanding of LOW range and how to climb and descend steep gradients, an excellent bit of preparation for what’s to come.
With a clear idea of what to expect that afternoon you’ll start your first serious ascent of the weekend. Along the way following the twists and turns of numerous creekbeds we’ll examine what is troublesome and what’s not, and as we commence the climb the views emerge, stunning scenery in all directions. So with day one’s activities successfully mastered it’s back to the quarters and our dinner date, with the A4WD team cooking up a sumptuous BBQ with salads and dessert, you won’t go hungry that’s for sure! After dinner you can unwind round the campfire and check out the stars.
Day two dawns and with an early start we get cracking on a trail that has everything, incredibly steep climbs where all you can see are bonnet and sky, loose screes that will have you scrambling for traction, awkward rock ledges and steps, but guess what? Every step along the way we’ll explain what’s going on and how to tackle the obstacle so you know exactly what’s going on, filling you with plenty of confidence.
Late Sunday afternoon we’ll have conquered the imposing Billy Goat spur, seen some incredible views from around 800 metres altitude and marvelled at the capability of your vehicle and importantly your new skills. This is an incredible program for all the family. A bonus for RAA members is a 10% discount, you can either ring the RAA to book or do it directly with us, and we’ll apply the discount too.
