Beyond the Bitumen Australia is blessed with some of the most incredible, uncluttered and unspoiled vistas in the world and it is exactly those qualities that make the country a magnet for filmmakers. Some of the best documentaries have come from these shores, jam-packed with incredible natural histories and stunning landforms. But when the filmmaker's lens is focused on the nature of Australian leisure and recreation, it often reveals a lifestyle that is the envy of the world! A lifestyle show with a difference is "Beyond The Bitumen". In what is probably the world's first dedicated 4WD touring series made for television, "Beyond The Bitumen" follows the travels of David, Rose, Tait and Georgia, as the family travels South Australia and the Northern Territory's outback and coast. Thirteen, informative half-hour programs, reveal the best ways to tackle a 4WD adventure, to make for an exciting and memorable holiday! Production of the series was undertaken by David and Rose, via their production company "Red Belly Productions". Their commitment to the project involved pre-production issues of funding, research and scripting, requiring two years of hard work gathering resources in readiness for filming. With a freelance crew assembled for the production phase, work in the field over a twelve-month period in 1998 began in earnest. As executive producers, David and Rose had to ensure the smooth running of the location work, as well as maintaining the momentum in post-production, scheduling episode completion at the required rate. The days were often long, for when out in the field whenever there was daylight, the cameras would be rolling. In amongst all of this, the day-to-day running of Adventure 4WD had to continue uninterrupted as well, accompanied by some degree of normalcy in their family life and the kids schooling. At the end of the day they can feel justifiably proud of their completed series. For first-timers in the television industry they have produced a full thirteen episode series, on-budget and on-time. They researched, scripted and presented each episode with a professionalism that usually only comes with years of practice. For the technically minded, "Beyond The Bitumen" was filmed using Sony SP Betacam and Sony DVCAM formats, the brilliant little camcorder used in the most difficult and trying "action" conditions, producing fantastic vision every time. The pics were assembled using an AVID digital production suite. From its very successful initial airing on Adelaide television, audiences across Australia have seen "Beyond The Bitumen" since 2000 on Foxtel "Lifestyle". David and Rose thank their sponsors and supporters, for their valuable contributions in making the series possible.
