Keeping a safe distance from other road users is always a good idea, especially when following another vehicle. The old 2 seconds rule (maintain a clear space to the next vehicle of around 2 seconds distance when measured from a roadside fixed object) is OK when conditions are good and your brakes and tyres are in good shape, but when winter rains fall you’ll need to “drive to the conditions” and space yourself out some more, adding perhaps another second or two to the equation.
